OUR MISSION
To champion the development of Africa’s dairy industry through advocacy, regional coordination, innovation, and strategic partnerships.

OUR VISION
A competitive and sustainable African dairy industry that supports livelihoods, drives economic growth, and ensures food and nutrition security across the continent
OUR STRATEGIC FOCUS
ESADA’s work is anchored on four core pillars that reflect our commitment to building a
competitive and sustainable dairy industry across Eastern and Southern Africa.
01
Policy Advocacy & Regional Integration
We work to influence national and regional policies that create enabling environments for dairy sector growth. Through collaboration with governments, regional blocs, and industry stakeholders, we champion harmonized standards, cross-border trade, and private-sector-inclusive policy frameworks.
02
Market Development & Trade Facilitation
ESADA supports the expansion of domestic, regional, and international markets for African dairy products. We promote investment, value addition, and the removal of trade barriers, while facilitating dialogue between producers, processors, and buyers to unlock new opportunities.
03
Capacity Building & Inclusion
We invest in the skills, knowledge, and organizational capacity of stakeholders across the dairy value chain, with a special focus on smallholder farmers, youth, and women. Our goal is to empower communities and strengthen local dairy ecosystems.
04
Innovation, Data & Research
ESADA promotes the use of technology, data, and research to support evidence-based decision-making in the dairy sector. We champion innovations that improve productivity, enhance traceability, and strengthen value chain competitiveness.
OUR CORE VALUES

HISTORY OF ESADA
The Eastern and Southern Africa Dairy Association (ESADA) was established in 2004 to strengthen the regional dairy industry through collaboration, knowledge exchange and coordinated private sector engagement. Recognizing the fragmented nature of the sector and the lack of unified representation, ESADA emerged as a platform to amplify the collective voice of national dairy stakeholders across the region.
Following its formation, ESADA was officially incorporated on January 10th, 2006 in Nairobi, Kenya, where it is headquartered. The association was registered under the Companies Act (Cap 486) as a non-profit, non-trading, and non-political organization limited by guarantee, with no share capital.
ESADA’s creation was informed by a USAID-funded study in 2004, which assessed inter- and intra-regional trade in dairy products across Eastern and Southern Africa. The study revealed that trade volumes between member countries were significantly low due to systemic challenges within the value chain, including policy disparities, lack of coordination, and limited market access.
In response, ESADA was formed as an umbrella association for dairy value chain actors (from producers and processors to cooperatives and policy makers), with the aim of catalyzing sector transformation, improving competitiveness and fostering regional integration.
At its inception, ESADA’s value proposition was clear:
“To be the go-to regional hub of organizational excellence for inter- and intra-African dairy sector growth for all value chain actors.”
Since then, ESADA has evolved into a respected regional institution — actively shaping policy, promoting trade, and driving innovation within Africa’s dairy industry
